What is vegetable tanning?
In short, vegetable tanned leather refers to the method of tanning the hide into leather, and is called vegetable due to the use of natural materials in the process, such as tree bark.
Why is it better?
The vegetable tanning process offers an eco-friendly alternative to the harsher chemicals utilized in chrome tanning, with the byproducts being 100% recyclable and offering the best possible conditions for the factory workers.
What are the alternatives?
This is one of oldest tanning methods known to man, though has been phased out due to faster, more environmentally detrimental tanning methods, such as chrome tanning. Chome tanning is a recently developed process applied to 90% of all leathers produced.
We have been fortunate to find a 3rd generation family-run factory that shares our sentiment regarding sustainability; one that also employs a passionate and dedicated workforce, offers fair wages, and an above average work environment.

Often referred to as “The Shoe Capital of the World”, León has been making shoes since 1645, with over 3000 manufacturers and 700 tanneries, it is a thriving industry, concentrated in a 36 km radius, and they are very proud of their rich history. For many years now, it has attracted the very best talent from across the shoe industry—from Italy, Spain and Argentina.
